The True Cost of Socialist Policies

Writer's picture: Sam WilksSam Wilks

Economic depressions, recessions, and rampant inflation are not accidents, they are predictable consequences of socialist policies that prioritise government intervention over free-market principles. Australia has experienced this cycle firsthand. Growing up watching East Germany and the collapse of Nauru, the lessons were clear as day. The implementation of interventionist policies in response to supposed crises has led to unsustainable debt and economic instability, which socialist parties then exploit to push for even more control and oversight. It’s a cycle that has repeated itself across history and continents, with devastating consequences.

Financially induced hardships have facilitated the rise of extremism in Australian politics. Socialists thrive in times of crisis. The fear and uncertainty of economic downturns make people more susceptible to the lure of false promises. Government debt, largely driven by expansive welfare programs, not only fuels inflation but also reduces the purchasing power of ordinary citizens, squeezing the middle class while purporting to save it. In doing so, socialists create an environment that legitimises their existence, all while systematically dismantling individual agency.

Consider the Northern Territory, my home, a region that has experienced the disastrous effects of misguided socialist policies. The push for state intervention and the subsequent growth of NGO influence have failed to address real issues, instead, they’ve created a dependent population and a stagnant economy. Meanwhile, private sector growth is stymied, with regulatory red tape choking the entrepreneurial spirit that should be driving progress.

The solution to economic instability is not more intervention, it’s less. Encouraging entrepreneurship, reducing regulation, and promoting accountability at all levels of government are steps towards reclaiming economic freedom. To truly overcome the financial instability imposed by socialist policies, there must be a cultural shift away from reliance on the state and towards personal responsibility and free enterprise.

In the NT, with a newly elected government and what have we been given instead….. A brand new unelected "UBER" bureaucrat, with even greater interventionist powers, and a team of hand-picked yes men and women who mainly rely on one form of subsidy, grant or another to survive. The New Socialism, just as harmful as the old, with a tinge more fascism. From the author.
